Winter Drive-In Experience

Posh Cockney was hired to manage all PR and Influencer Marketing for Celestial Cinema’s Winter Drive-In experience in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire. The following case study is a breakdown of what services were provided and how they were carried out.

Our Objective

Celestial Cinema had had huge success at their Summer Drive-in earlier in the year. Our objective was to create a buzz around their winter event and generate both local and national press. As well as this, we were to find and approach influencers who matched the brand's ethos and invite them down, in exchange for coverage on their social media sites.

The main challenge we faced was breaking through the noise of Covid and Lockdowns. We needed to create a story and a narrative that would excite people and make them want to read on, and then attend.
Due to the event being outside of London, it was also a challenge to encourage both press and influencers to travel to the site in some circumstances.
Ever changing restrictions also cause problems towards the final weeks, as this created much confusion for guests.

Our Approach

The team took time to get to know and understand the brand. They researched previous events and campaigns and ensured they had a strong understanding of Celestial Cinema’s ethos and brand voice.

They then looked into the area that the event was taking place and the best press and influencers to target to create the best coverage.

What we did

Our team created a selection of Press Releases, aimed at both local and national publications, radio and TV.

We created a list of influencers that were local to the area, had a large social media following and had children, and invited them to the event, in return for featuring on their social media pages.

We also took a more specific approach for specific movies. For example, for the screening of The Nutcracker Ballet, we reached out to local dance schools, offering discounts and VIP tickets.

We created a good relationship with members of the community who managed local facebook groups, and liaised with them to regularly promote upcoming movies.

Our team reached out to local MPs as well as the Mayor of Beaconsfield and the Mayor of Buckinghamshire, to inform them about and invite them to the event.

With the ever changing restrictions, the team kept influencers and press up to date, informing them that the experience would be remaining open.

When the Drive In was then forced to close a few weeks later, the team created a press release asking for the support of the local community, to allow the brand to continue to spread Christmas cheer.

The Results

We successfully secured both national and local press for Celestial Cinema’s drive-in with an estimated readership of 8.32M and an estimated 35.5k coverage views. All articles were backlinked to the Celestial Cinema website and articles had over 200 social media shares.

We invited many local influencers who all posted very positive coverage across their social media pages.

What's next?

Posh Cockney continues to work alongside Celestial Cinema on a number of ongoing projects. We look forward to being able to get back to working on their Drive-in experiences as soon as local and national covid restrictions allow.

Pierluigis Beckenham Provided 100 meals for NHS Workers at Beckenham Beacon this New Year’s Eve

The NHS has always been a vital and much-loved part of the community, and this year, more than ever, we have realised and appreciated the sacrifices that they make. 2020 may have finally come to an end, but for the thousands of NHS workers, the fight is far from over.

Beckenham Beacon has given critical care to so many over the last twelve months. Covid has caused staff to be stretched and pushed, often working incredibly long hours, in order to save lives. Covid didn’t stop for New Year’s Eve, and therefore, the staff did not stop either.

There were 100 dedicated people working at Beckenham Beacon this New Year’s Eve, and Pierluigis, along with Posh Cockney CEO Liam Norval, wanted to give back to those who have given so much to so many. It’s time to thank our incredible NHS for their relentless work over the last year.

This family-run restaurant is well known in the community for fantastic food and an incredibly warm and welcoming family environment. During lockdown, they kept locals fed through their takeaway service, and last week they extended this warmth by providing 100 hot, free meals to the staff at Beckenham Beacon.

“I am privileged to have been able to provide hot meals for the incredible staff at Beckenham Beacon. They have been the heart of our community this year and I hope this is a small step towards showing our thanks and gratitude to them all.” – Marco, Owner of Pierluigis

We are not Alone this Christmas

Tier 4 announcements have left many Londoners feeling alone and isolated this Christmas. We just wanted to take this opportunity to reach out to you all and let you know that we are here. This year has been incredibly difficult for everyone in the hospitality industry, but now more than ever, it is important to see the enormity of the community we find ourselves in. You are not alone in this fight, please reach out if you need to, we are stronger together.

Stay connected with friends and family. If you can’t be there in person, pick up the phone. I know we all hoped we would have seen the back of Zoom by now, but it could be the only connection for some, this festive season. That quiz that is an annoyance to you, could be the only social interaction for another.

If you can’t reach out to friends and family, there are many organisations, ready and waiting to speak with you. Below is a list of just a few.

Your mental health is important. It is perfectly okay to feel however you are feeling. If we stick together, we will get through these new restrictions, and come out the other side in a world full of vaccinations and celebrations.

The team at Posh Cockney would like to thank you once again, for everyone’s continued support this year. We are proud of how much we have grown, and we can’t wait to see where 2021 takes us.

Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a much brighter New Year.

  1. Know who your competitors are

Is someone else selling a similar product to yours or running a similar restaurant? What can you learn from them? How can you be better?

  1. Create a website

Café de Paris Closes its doors after 96 Years

Another day, another sad announcement.

Café de Paris is one of London’s oldest and most iconic venues. Known not only for its incredible cabaret shows and memorable parties but for its phenomenal history.

The venue first opened its doors in 1924. Back then, Café de Paris was frequented by famous faces such as Cole Porter, as well as Louise Brookes who made history there, by performing the first-ever Charleston in London.

During the Second World War, the venue initially stayed open with its manager promoted it as the “safest and gayest restaurant in town, being 20ft below ground.” In 1941 the venue was hit during the Blitz, with many performers, staff, and guests sadly losing their lives.

The venue didn’t reopen until 1948 when it firmly re-established itself as one of the leading theatre clubs in London, playing host to Judy GarlandFrank SinatraGrace Kelly, and many more. Since then, the venue has been host to many incredible performers, as well as providing the backdrop for films and TV shows.

In 2002, Café de Paris was bought by Maxwell’s Restaurant Group, which also owns Tropicana Beach Club as well as many other well-known bars, clubs, and restaurants. Unfortunately, this month the group has had to make the heartbreaking decision not to reopen any of these much-loved venues. 400 jobs will be lost, and that of course does not include the dancers, performers, DJs, and others who freelance there.

The closure of these iconic places really goes to show the impact that this pandemic is having on the nightclub scene.

The NTIA has been campaigning for better support from the Government, as the move into Tier 4 puts even most strain on the sector. “The Night Time Economy & Hospitality sector has lost all confidence in the government strategy against Covid,” said Night Time Industries Association CEO Michael Kill in a statement. “The unrelenting closing and reopening of businesses are costing owners hundreds of thousands of pounds, and coupled with the erratic decision-making around restrictions, is rapidly destroying the ability of the sector to bounce back.”

Café de Paris welcomed a new General Manager, Aaron Sinkia at the end of last year. After an incredibly successful January and February, they were set to have their best year yet. But with their doors tightly shut for the last nine months, the story has sadly had a very different ending.

Posh Cockney CEO Liam Norval spent 10 years working at Café de Paris as Marketing Director. Here he built his career, making contacts right across the hospitality world, and hosting incredible events such as Celebrity Saturday.

This is truly heart-breaking news. I spent almost a decade at this amazing venue and have some unforgettable memories that I will cherish for the rest of my life. I think back to some of the incredible parties we threw, the celebrities we had through the door, the people I met, and the friends I made.  Café de Paris was an institution and will always be in my heart as I know it will be in many others. The team I worked with over that 10-year span were fantastic, and I call them all very dear friends today, I wish them all the very best of luck. Who knows if this is the end for Café de Paris, I certainly hope not.” – Liam Norval, CEO at Posh Cockney

This is a venue close to the hearts of the whole team here at Posh Cockney, and we are hugely saddened by the news. However, we know that with closure, comes opportunity. We are confident that these venues will not stay closed for long, and we are excited to watch the next stage of their history unfold. 2024 will be Café de Paris’ 100th birthday, that sounds like a party everyone will be wanting an invite to.

Liam Norval is announced as Non exec director at PURE Vodka, WM Spirits

PURE is an Organic Vodka brand which has already seen huge success this year with the launch of their latest product PURE Lite. Managing Director Adam Player developed the idea for this home-grown British brand, after realising the need for a cleaner, healthier vodka alternative.

After working with the brand for over a year, Liam and Adam have built up an exceptional working relationship, this is a fantastic step towards further developing the brand.

“I am very excited to take on this new role within PURE Vodka, I have worked closely with the brand for over a year and moving into a non-exec role will allow me to help the company grow and develop further. I am delighted to be able to lend my experiences and knowledge to this fast-growing brand, watch this space for some huge announcements in the next year.” – Liam Norval

“It’s been a pleasure working with Liam and his Posh Cockney team for the last year, bringing Liam on board with his experience and contacts is a great move for the business, and we look forward to having more success as a company and seeing where this new relationship can take us.” – Adam Player, Managing Director at PURE

2021 is looking like a big year for PURE Vodka as they hope to build on their recent success. With Liam on board, we can be sure that there will be star studded events and exciting new product launches coming your way very soon.

The Vaccine is Finally Here – What does this mean for Hospitality?

There is finally a light at the end of the very long Covid tunnel.

This week, the first vaccines in the world were given, here on UK soil. This is an incredible step for science and a huge step in the right direction for getting our lives back to normal.

The Pfizer/BioNTech jab is the fastest vaccine to go from concept to reality, taking only 10 months to follow the same steps that normally take up to 10 years.

The UK has already ordered 40 million doses of the jab – enough to vaccinate 20 million people.

But what does this mean for Hospitality?

As one of the sectors worst hit by closures, job losses, and restrictions, the Hospitality Industry is desperate for things to get back to normal.

Research suggests that 80-90% of the population needs to have immunity before Covid is no longer a threat. That is a vast amount of people. Due to the current vaccine needing to be kept at -70 degrees Celsius and transported in quantities of 1,000 doses, carrying out the vaccinations in some rural areas is going to prove incredibly difficult.

As well as this, some people simply do not want to be vaccinated, and it won’t be compulsory.

There have been talks of some travel companies, restaurants, hotels, and venues asking for proof of a person’s vaccination before allowing them entry. This has proved incredibly controversial but may be the only way that businesses can ensure the safety of their staff and customers and ultimately, allow them to keep their business open.

Is there another option?

Rapid testing could offer the hospitality and events industry the solution they need. The Answers People are offering the hospitality sector one of the fastest and most effective rapid tests.. This quick and easy test gives results in just 5-8 minutes, meaning that after a short wait, businesses can let consumers in through their doors, feeling confident that they have significantly reduced the risk to staff and guests.

The test involves a straight-forward nasal swab. Similar to a pregnancy test, the user will see a control line, and need to wait several minutes to see if a positive line also appears.

“The test detects proteins on the surface of the virus and identifies infection even before the body starts to produce antibodies. A highly effective tool at reducing risk, enabling those infected to quickly isolate. We remain focussed on bringing agile and effective solutions to our customers, offering affordable options to protect your team, your customers, and your business.” Gillian Hoffman, The Answers People.

With 98.5% effectiveness, this is a very promising option for businesses. It is straightforward to administer, and ideal for on-the-day testing. This would offer companies a way of ensuring safety for events and sports matches, for example, as well as hospitality venues and hotels. The Answers People do recommend that the test is administered by suitably trained staff, but say it is possible and easy to self-administer.

We are definitely moving in a far more positive direction and I think we are safe to start hoping for a much brighter summer, full of events and celebrations.

Takeaway Fatigue and Christmas Uncertainty

Lockdown one saw us grabbing a takeaway from our favourite cafes and restaurants, setting up camp in a park with people in our Covid bubble and enjoying a warm British summer. This lockdown feels a little different. With the weather far colder and wetter, people are opting to spend their time wrapped up indoors. And with job losses on the rise, we just don’t have that extra cash for a takeaway meal, when we could cook one ourselves at home.

This is becoming a big problem for businesses in the Hospitality Sector, particularly when many of them have spent time and money creating and marketing new lockdown takeaway menus and cook at home kits.

The Jersey Hospitality Association has come up with it’s own suggestion to combat the loss of income for the Hospitality Sector on the run up to Christmas. It’s asking businesses to give their staff vouchers, to be used at restaurants in the new year, in replacement of a Christmas party, in the hope that this creates income for local venues.

“This has been a devastating year for trading in our sector. We are conscious that it has also been a painful year for other sections of the economy, and this gives corporate businesses an opportunity to offer vouchers to their staff as a reward after a difficult year.” Simon Soar, Chief Executive of the JHA told ITV.

Whilst the novelty of the takeaway seems to have worn off, there is some light at the end of the tunnel. Since the end of the Welsh firebreak lockdown, venues there have been fully booked since opening, and we can hope that this will be the case across England also. The problem comes as we get closer to Christmas. By now, venues would be well on their way to being booked up for Christmas Eve, Christmas day and of course, New years Eve, but with so much uncertainty over restrictions, people have been unable to make plans.  Some people have begun to get creative however, I recently spoke to a venue in Wales, planning to have a theme each hour as countries around the world welcome in the new year.

It’s clear that the UK Hospitality industry is a resilient one and it will not be going down with out a fight. A huge part of Christmas is spending it with friends and families, in the venues that we know and love. I am sure we will all be doing our bit to support them and booking a table as soon as we get some clarity from the Government on what we can and can’t do this festive season.
